Description

This session will discuss how financial institutions should respond to terrorism and how to exploit the financial vulnerability of terrorist organizations and operatives.

The terrorist landscape changes on a daily basis due to a variety of factors. As the Islamic State continues to lose territory in Syria and Iraq, they have called upon their loyalists to strike out and commit acts of terrorism in their homeland. The threat of returning foreign fighters and homegrown violent extremists to Western nations as evidenced by attacks in Paris, Brussels, Nice, and Orlando and more recently in Berlin and Istanbul is extremely problematic. Jihadists, under the guise of Islam, have demonstrated the ability to execute terrorist attacks all over the globe and particularly in the West. This compelling session will discuss how terrorist trends evolve and how terrorists are reliant on money to succeed and sustain their operations. Finance is also one of the key vulnerabilities terrorists confront.

Objectives of the Presentation
  • Understanding factors that cause terrorist trends
  • Comparing and contrasting terrorist organizational threats
  • Building a business model for a terrorist organization
  • Understanding the power of financial intelligence
  • Understanding the importance of public – private partnerships
  • Building a plan to respond to terrorist events
Why Should you Attend
Terrorism is a threat to national security. The financial system poses a contrast to terrorist organizations and operatives. On one hand, financial institutions serve as a facilitation tool enabling terrorists an opportunity to move store and access much needed funds. On the other hand, financial institutions can be a detection mechanism that can be a valuable resource in disrupting and preventing the flow of funds necessary to sustain terrorist organizations and operations. Hence, financial institutions are on the front line in the fight to deny terrorists the access to money, which is their lifeblood. The more aware financial institution compliance personnel are of the possibility to disrupt terrorist financing, the more likely terrorist funds can be disrupted, thereby safeguarding national security.
